Editorial Review:

Product Description:
With the exception of the 9/11 disaster, the top ten most costly catastrophes in U.S. history have all been natural disasters--five of them hurricanes--and all have occurred since 1989. Why this tremendous plague on our homes? In Acts of God, environmental historian Ted Steinberg explains that much of the death and destruction has been well within the realm of human control. Steinberg exposes the fallacy of seeing such calamities as simply random events. Beginning with the 1886 Charleston and 1906 San Francisco earthquakes, and continuing to the present, Steinberg explores the unnatural history of natural calamity, the decisions of business leaders and government officials that have paved the way for the greater losses of life and property, especially among those least able to withstand such blows--America's poor, elderly, and minorities. Seeing nature or God as the primary culprit, Steinberg argues, has helped to hide the fact that some Americans are better protected from the violence of nature than their counterparts lower down the socioeconomic ladder. Sure to provoke discussion, Acts of God is a call to action that must be heard. ""A sobering lesson in humanity's vulnerability to extreme climatic events, especially the impoverished farmer and the urban poor.""--The Los Angeles Times Book Review

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Helpful Hazards Studies Reference
I read this in one weekend for discussion in a graduate natural hazards seminar, lots of stimulating information-- a worthy, and friendly read for the professor and the student.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Acts of God
A real eye-opener. Should be required reading from high school on up. Not only will it help people make better choices on where to live, voters might think twice about who they put in office and just how much those elected officials' pet projects are really going to benefit their community.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Race Baiting Socialsit Agenda
This book is garbage. Steinbergs thesis is that evil white business class sticks it to minorities and the poor; and that there is no such thing as natural disasters. Disasters are really a capitalist tool to destroy and enslave miniorities and the poor. Dont buy it unless you have to read it as part of a class like I did.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Nature is the What, Culture is the Who--Lovely Analytic Account
I am starting to think about a 2009 book on CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE: Faith, Ideology, and the Five Minds (the later from Five Minds for the Future and I am constantly enchanted when I run across a vital reference to how culture is the disaster, not nature.

This book is a magnificent epistle on the folly of mankind and the duplicity of government, business and the media. The author of totally brilliant as he gently sets forth the myth that we are not responsible for acts of God when in ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Where The Real Blame Falls
Have "natural disasters" become more destructive ... or has economic development caused this alleged paradigm? Ted Steinberg investigates and confirms what private developers don't want you to hear.

As the population grows and moves to more hazard-prone locales (ocean-front properties in Florida and along California's fault lines), humans are creating a supply-and-demand environment with major catastrophes looming on the horizon. Steinburg digs deep into the annuls of American history ... Read More
